The ratio is the comparsion of sizes between two different quantities of same units.
If x and y be two quantities, then the ratio is defined by x:y
Example : If 19 boys and 13 girls are there in a class. Then the ratio of boys is to girls = 19:13
What is the ratio of nitrogen to the potash ?
To mixing rose fertilizer, There are 3/8 cup of potash & [tex]1\frac{3}{4}[/tex] cup of nitrogen.
Amount of potash = 3/8 cup
Amount of nitrogen = [tex]1\frac{3}{4}[/tex] cup = 7/4 cup
Denominator of amount of potash is 8 and denominator of amount of nitrogen is 4, so for the sake of calculation we multiply 2 in both numerator and denominator of amount of nitrogen.
So,the amount of nitrogen = 14/8 cup
∴ The ratio of nitrogen to potash = 14/8 : 3/8
= 14/8 × 8/3
= 14/3
= 14:3
