According to the theory of plate tectonics, Earth’s surface is composed of many sections of crust and solid upper mantle. Forces within the Earth cause the sections, or plates, to move. The West Coast of South America is a convergent boundary between the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate.


The Arabian plate is running up on the Eurasian plate.
