Almost from the very beginning, but particularly during the 19th century, the problem of alcoholism and the abuse of alcohol, though still not recognized as it is today, was enormous. In fact, some studies have shown that people, especially men in the United States were consuming up to 7 gallons of alcohol within a year. The problem with alcohol drinking was that, especially according to women, it led to serious corruption of the good health of homes and society because it encouraged domestic violence, unnecessary spending and real health issues, particularly in men. This is why women became great advocates of Temperance, a movement dedicated to curtailing the huge consumption of alcohol on the grounds of the damage drinking caused to the social and spiritual wellbeing of people and their homes. Because it was socially believed that women were the main caregivers in society, and their role was to look after the physical, spiritual and social health in their homes and in society, it was well seen that they undertook the leadership of a movement like temperance, that exactly sought to limit an activity that had been damaging the good social standing and the behavior of men in the U.S.
