Mating preference is the biological process through which a mate is found based on the attraction to a certain characteristic found in the individuals of the opposite sex. It is a vital process, as it is one of the primary mechanisms through which evolution can occur.
It is very common in the animal kingdom to use color as the cue in mating preference. These cues always have an energetic cost associated with their presence and creation. Thus, generally a bright color indicate a healthy and successful individual.
From the data obtained in this experiment and illustrated in the graph, the largest number of matings occurred between brightly colored males and females. In the case of this species, it seems that females prefer more brightly colored males, as shown by our experimental data.
