First you must combine like terms.

Like terms are numbers that have matching variables OR are numbers with out variables. In this case the like terms are 4x and 6x, since they both have the variables "x" attached. The other set of like terms are -2 and 8

To bring 4x to the side that 6x is on, you must subtract 4x to both sides (what you do on one side you must do to the other). Since 4x is being added on the left side, subtraction (the opposite of addition) will cancel it out (make it zero) from the left side and bring it over to the right side.

4x - 4x - 2 > 6x - 4x + 8

0 - 2 > 2x + 8

-2 > 2x + 8

To bring 8 to the side that -2 is on, you must subtract 8 to both sides (what you do on one side you must do to the other). Since 8 is being added on the right side, subtraction (the opposite of addition) will cancel it out (make it zero) from the right side and bring it over to the left side.

-2 - 8 > 2x + 8 - 8

-10 > 2x + 0

-10 > 2x

To completely isolate x divide 2 to both sides. Since 2 is being multiplied by x, division (the opposite of multiplication) will cancel 2 out (in this case it will make 2 one) from the right side and bring it over to the left side.

-10 ÷ 2 > 2x ÷ 2

-5 > 1x

-5 > x

or

x < -5

Hope this helped!

4x - 2 > 6x + 8 ⏐+ 2 - 6x

4x - 2 + (2 - 6x) > 6x + 8 + (2 - 6x)

4x - 6x > 8 + 2

-2x > 10 ⏐: 2

-x > 5 ⏐· (-1)

x < -5
