At the beginning of the American Revolution, colonial society had well-differentiated groups, with some greater rights than others.

Thus, at the top of the social pyramid were white males, who possessed all the civil and political rights, and all the freedoms that the colonists enjoyed at that time.

Behind these were white women, who did not have the political rights of white men but did have the rest of the rights, although they were in practice subject to the will of their parents or husbands.

Then came the Native Americans, who although they were free, did not enjoy the political rights of the whites, and had much fewer civil prerogatives.

Finally, there were the blacks, who were not free in themselves, unless their masters freed them. Therefore, they had no freedom or rights, being considered mere properties.

Even the entire economic system of the colonies was based on this social organization, where whites were the owners of the means of production and natives and blacks were the main labor force.
