Another way in which the 2nd law of thermodynamics can be expressed is the  following: the entropy (the degree of randomness) of an isolated system can never decrease. This means that an isolated system (=no exchange of energy with the surroundings) cannot go from a state at higher entropy (=higher temperature) to a state at lower entropy (=lower temperature) spontaneously.
