In studying history we come across what men were and did, and it helps us understand what we can be and do. Thus, history is the science of the past and the present, but the study of the past and the understanding of the present do not happen in a perfect way, as we do not have the power to return to the past and it does not repeat itself. For this reason, the past has to be “recreated”, taking into account the changes that have occurred over time. Information collected in the past will not serve the present if it is not recreated, questioned, understood and interpreted.

Historical accounts can help us to have a clearer understanding of the events that happen presently. The Holocaust is a past historical event where about 6 million Jews were killed during the Second World War.

  • World leaders watched on as this happened because they did not want to get entangled in the affairs of Germans. Today, some nations battle among themselves with little or no interventions from bigger nations.
  • A strategy to  help us become conscious of presentism is "Avoiding assumptions." If a person avoids assumptions, then bias will be absent in our understanding of events.

Presentism is the act of judging the past by present values. It can infuse bias into our thoughts of matters.

To avoid presentism, avoid assumptions and reading meanings into the reasons why things happen the way they do.
