At the beginning of the story, it states that “Earl was not a very good fisherman.” When he brought back perfectly filleted salmon steaks, it was too good to be true. Earl also acted strangely when Gail stated that she didn’t know he could fillet a fish like that. The receipt was proof that Earl didn’t catch any fish and he lied to his wife. He instead bought it from the grocery store. Gail was disappointed because her husband lied to her and he couldn’t make and honest living of fishing. She was also unsurprised because he never caught anything and if he would it wouldn’t be perfectly fillet salmon.

Gail found the receipt for the purchase of the fatted salmon and she was disappointed because she thought her husband had learned how to fish and slice the fish, but she wasn't surprised because she knew he wasn't a good fisherman.
We can see that the receipt was for the purchase of silver salmon because:
- At the beginning of the text, we see Gail claiming that her husband was not a good fisherman.
- So it would be impossible for a bad fisherman to get so much salmon filet and sliced professionally.
- She is suspicious when her husband explains how he learned to cut salmon.
- The receipt is proof that the sliced salmon was purchased.
Although she is suspicious, she is hopeful that her husband has learned how to fish and how to slice fish, so she is disappointed to see the receipt, but she is not surprised.
