What is drug resistant bacteria?
Drug resistant bacteria are bacteria that are killed, removed or controlled by antibiotics.
Examples of drug-resistant bacteria are;
- methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
- Penicillin-resistant Enterococcus
- Multi-drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Scientists are concerned about genetic mutation that causes drug resistance in bacteria because it leads to increase rate of infection and incurable diseases. There is still hope as sophisticated measures are being carried out to inhibit the horizontal gene transfer in these organisms and can serve as a novel therapeutic strategy to fight drug resistance.
