Arthur Holmes proposed a theory that convection happened in the earths mantle which therefore explained the push and pull of the continent plates together and apart. He also helped scientists in oceanographic research in the 1950s which publicized Hess's theory known as 'Sea floor spreading'. After the 60s the theory of plate tectonics was established.
