The Islamic belief of creation of the earth is very similar to that of the Jews and the Christians. According to the Holy Quran, initially there was no division between the heavens and the earth. Eventually, there was a big explosion that divided the heavens and the earth. It is said that Allah caused this big explosion. Then, on Allah’s command, the elements separated by the blast came closer and then started to form the universe in a particular shape. The Quran states that Allah then created the Sun, the Moon, and all the other celestial objects. He brought to life creatures that could swim, fly, crawl, walk, and so on. The Quran indicates that Allah created all this with his commands, in six days. He created man by sending angels to Earth, commanding them to fetch seven different types of soil from which he would create a man.

According to the Iroquois stories of creation, before Earth was created, there was a floating island that was inhabited by the Sky people. It was a happy land, where people did not need to die and therefore did not need to reproduce. There was no sickness or misery of any kind. During that idyllic time, the Sun wasn’t created. There was a tree on the center of the island, which was the only source of light for the people of the island. One day, a lady realized that she was pregnant, and expecting twins. When her husband learned of this, he was infuriated, in a fit of rage, tore the tree, and released light from the middle. He then created a huge hole and pushed his wife into that watery pit. Some animals saw her fall into the hole, and rescued her before she could reach the waters. These animals then tried to save the woman. A toad collected mud from the water of the seas and spread it on the back of a turtle. The mud then started to expand until it grew to the size of North America. The woman then entered the land and sprinkled some dust into the sky to create the stars, the moon, and the sun. The twins were then born on this island. Therefore, Iroquois respect animals and hold them in high regard.
