Imagine a mutant organism that has a H+ channel in its mitochondrial membranes, such that the mitochondrial compartments are fully permeable to H+. How would you expect respiration to be affected in this organism?

ATP is the energy coin of the cell. In cellular respiration, ATP is mainly produced by the electron transport chain (ETC) which is coupled to a concentration gradient of protons in the inner mitochondrial membrane.

  • In this case, the organism above described CANNOT synthesize ATP by the electron transport chain (ETC) because it cannot generate a concentration gradient of protons (H+).
