One of the various ways that energy moves through space is by electromagnetic radiation.

Electromagnetic radiation includes the heat from a blazing fire, the sun's light, the X-rays used by your doctor, and the energy used to cook food in a microwave.

Waves are recognizable to anyone who has ever gone swimming in the ocean.

Electromagnetic waves are similar, however they differ in that they are made up of 222 waves that oscillate perpendicular to one another.

An oscillating magnetic field is one of the waves, while an oscillating electric field is the other.

Mechanical waves travel in a vacuum, whereas electromagnetic waves travel in a vacuum. Mechanical waves require the assistance of a medium to travel and can only travel at the speed of that medium whereas electromagnetic waves can pass through any medium.
