Civil disobedience and passive resistance were the tactics that Martin Luther King Jr. employed to great effect in the civil rights movement.

 Civil disobedience refers to the resusal to obey the government, akin to boycotting. It is non-violent form of protest. Civil disobedience is a symbolic or ritualistic violation of the law instead of a rejection of the system as a whole.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who turnt into the most populsar spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until he was assassinated in 1968.
