A group of 19 students want to see the show at the planetarium. Tickets cost $11 for each student portal who is a member of the planetarium's frequent visitor program and $13 for each student who is not a member. The total cost of the students tickets is $209. Joining the frequent visitor program at the planetarium costs $5 per year. Write an equation that can be used to determine n, the number of visits per year for which the cost of being a member of the frequent visitor program is equal to the cost of not being a member.

Let us say that:

x = number of students who are members.

 

Since both groups went together to the planetarium, therefore this means that 19-x is the number of students who are not member

 

Since x paid $11 for tickets and (19-x) paid $13 so the total cost of the tickets is:

 

$11x + $13(19-x) = $209

 

Solving for x would get us the number of members:

11x + 247 – 13x = 209

-2x = -38

x = 19

Therefore this means that all students are members.
