Why didn't the physician prescribe an antibiotic for botulism? It is because antibiotics can accelerate the release of toxins in other types of botulism.
Explanation:
Botulism is a serious poisoning condition caused by the poison or bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The toxin is produced by the bacterium which is known as one of the most powerful poison. Botulism is rare. However, when botulism happens it is a serious and life-threatening condition.
There are three types of botulism: wound botulism, infant botulism, and foodborne botulism. Each of those types needs different treatment. Antibiotics are only useful to treat and reduce the symptoms of wound botulism. In the other two types of botulism, antibiotic will accelerate the toxin from botulism and danger the patient’s lives. Thus, a physician or doctor cannot give it to every type of botulism.
Other ways to save the patient’s lives from botulism are:
• Antitoxin injection for wound botulism and foodborne botulism’s patient to reduce the risk of complication.
• Given ventilator or breathing apparatus to help the patient breath easily. This will be given for weeks or until the toxic effect gradually reduced.
• Rehabilitation therapy for botulism survivor. This therapy aims to help the recovery process for the survivor in speaking, improving bodily functions, and swallowing.

Physicians did not prescribe any antibiotics in case of botulism because antibiotics did not degrade the toxin that is released by the bacteria. The antibiotics act by killing the bacteria.
Further Explanation:
Botulism is a rare food borne illness that is life-threatening. This condition can result in paralysis. It can develop due to consuming contaminated water and food. It mainly caused by bacteria named clostridium botulism. It secretes toxins inside the body, which mainly attack the nervous system. The main types of botulism are:
- Infant botulism
- Wound botulism
- Inhalation botulism
The Symptoms of botulism are:
- Blurred vision
- Weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Vomiting
- Belly pain
- Diarrhea
Mainly in the treatment of botulism, physicians avoid prescription of antibiotics. This is because the antibiotics only inhibit the growth of the bacteria but they did not degrade the toxin released by the bacteria. Only in case of wound botulism, doctors prescribe antibiotics. Mainly in botulism condition doctors inject antitoxin to reduce the problem, which is related to the toxin.
