The two speeds could be expressed as vectors. The speed of the boat is merely [tex]1.7i+0j[/tex]. The speed of the climbing man, using the boat as reference, is more complicated. It is [tex]\frac{0.60}{\sqrt{2}}i+\frac{0.60}{\sqrt{2}}j=0.30\sqrt{2}i+0.30\sqrt{2}j[/tex]. Calculate the sums of the two and the speed itself.
