coconut is a common element to many Garafuna treats and food

The common element of Garifuna typical food is coconut, other basic ingredients such as roots and tubers, among which are sweet and bitter yucca and yams, also bananas, sweet potatoes, among others.


In addition, much of the main dishes, treats and desserts are made from coconuts.  This basic ingredient can be found throughout the Caribbean Sea region.


This type of typical food, rich in mixtures and varieties, is due to the traditions of the ancestors of the Garifuna, who were mainly African, Carib and Arawak aborigines.
